7digital What we said: Two pioneering art-pop outfits pooling their talents? FFS: what a fantastic idea. In fact, it’s such a great idea, you wonder why Franz Ferdinand and Sparks didn’t think of it a lot sooner. From their innuendo-laden acronym, down to song titles like ‘Collaborations Never Work’, FFS take a suitably arch approach to the alliance, yet succeed in balancing all that knowing wit with enough enthusiasm to counter any accusations of smugness. Sonically, their separate musical strengths prove mutually complementary too, be that the marriage of music hall piano and glam-rock guitar licks, or the way that Alex Kapranos’ and the Mael brothers’ staccato vocals bounce off one another.
