So when The Low Anthem’s 2009 album Oh My God, Charlie Darwin broke through, you’d think they’d have been straight on the case in using some of those extra pennies to pay for a residency at some far-flung, plush recording suite, right? Nope! Instead, the masochistic, Rhode Island folk-rockers holed up in an unheated, derelict pasta sauce factory just down the road… in the depths of winter. It sounds crazy, yes, but it’s a sacrifice that’s paid off, with the cavernous expanses of their makeshift studio providing waves of cacophonous reverb, adding a haunting resonance to the gorgeous Smart Flesh.
