7digital What we said: Listening back to Robert Glasper Experiment’s 2012 cover of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, it’s hard not to be mesmerised by the quartet’s ability to transform snarling grunge into delicate neo-soul. At the time, Glasper revealed to Downbeat he’d “gotten bored with jazz” so chose to weave improvisation into R&B and hip-hop arrangements, and it’s a formula that’s subsequently turned the heads of Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu and Frank Ocean. This time round, the outfit eschew big-name collaborations and perform all vocals in-house, even including a heartfelt speech about police brutality from Glasper’s young son. The result is a record that serves as a poignant snapshot of contemporary black music.
