7digital What we said: Last time we heard from Richard Hawley, he was exploring widescreen psych-rock on 2012’s Mercury Prize-nominated Standing At The Sky’s Edge. ‘Sometimes I Feel’ and ‘Which Way’ aside, this follow-up finds the Sheffield-born troubadour deliberately eschewing the dense, swampy textures of his last LP, and selecting subtle arrangements to allow his ruminations on relationships and the passing of time sufficient room to breathe. Even the cameos are understated, be that Jarvis Cocker playing Rheem Kee bass on ‘Nothing Like A Friend’ or Slow Club’s Rebecca Taylor lending her soulful vocals as a texture, as part of Sheffield collective Hick Street Chip Shop Singers. Hollow Meadows isn’t just a beautiful record, it’s an important reminder that nobody does misty-eyed romanticism better than Richard Hawley.
