7digital What we said: Listening to Nao’s voice, it seems incredible that she lurked in the shadows for so long, first as a singing teacher, and then as backing vocalist for Pulp and Kwabs. Lithe and sweet, with a subtle power, it bathes every syllable in light, with seemingly effortless ease. It’s put to excellent use here, on a full-length debut brimming with inventive arrangements, courtesy of a white-hot production team comprised of A. K. Paul, Jungle, Grades and Loxe. On superb single ‘Bad Blood’, robust kick drum and syncopated synth flourishes provide a minimal base for the South Woodford-raised singer to riff across octaves and play with the space between notes. Elsewhere, you’ll find her silky tones caressing everything from sashaying electro-funk (‘Inhale Exhale’) to neon-lit neo soul (‘Adore You’), with spellbinding results.
