7digital What we said: Mount Eerie’s exquisite 2017 album A Crow Looked At Me was written in the immediate aftermath of the death of Phil Elverum’s wife, artist Geneviève Castrée. The follow-up is Now Only, an astounding release which deals with the jarring, lingering ghost of loss: trying to piece together life again for their young daughter, starting conversations with Castrée which she won’t answer, reliving moments in the house, poring over left-behind diaries, remembering her gasping on her deathbed. The result is an at once charged but delicate folk-tinged release that is suitably immersive, cathartic and frequently overwhelming. In his ruminations on building a life in the endlessly draining face of death, Elverum has created another magnificently powerful album that faces the devastating reality of being human.
