7digital What we said: Ahead of the release of his debut album, Californian artist Moses Sumney penned a poignant Tumblr essay, querying whether romance is a construct. Indeed, this is the thread that ties Aromanticism together, sonically and lyrically: a discourse over whether we ought to consider romance as normative and necessary. These are gentle, soulful soundscapes that drift like an endless heavenly dream: ‘Quarrel’, for example, clocks in at nearly seven minutes, and crescendos with silky falsetto harmonies, celestial cascades of harps and crackling electronic organ. Cut with spoken word, warm swathes of brass, and occasional spirals of more upbeat percussion, Aromanticism is gorgeous and plaintive. Whether you agree with Sumney’s assessment of relationships or not, this is the perfect album for the lulling end of summer days.
