7digital What we said: Before she was a well-behaved fashionista and home-loving type, Lily Allen was a mouthy internet sensation, all prom dresses, Nikes and Elizabeth Arden bling. On her debut she delighted in wittily documenting the minutiae of life as a teenager in the capital. A foul-mouthed breath of fresh air, her disarmingly sweet singing masked a wickedly acerbic tongue that spared nobody’s modesty: unfaithful exes, mortgage lenders and her stoner brother were all fair game.

Musically, Alright, Still’s main influences lie in The Streets and The Specials, nabbing garage beats from the former on tracks like ‘Knock ‘Em Out’ and plundering 2 Tone on ‘Friday Night’, a hilarious update of the latter’s ‘Nite Klub’ for the MySpace generation. With infectious hooks honed by producers Mark Ronson and Future Cut, plus Allen’s own deadpan delivery, the album inspired hoards of imitators, most notably Kate Nash. But don’t hold all that against Lily: from the vindictive reggae of ‘Smile’, utterly skank-able ‘LDN’ and Sandie Shaw-samplingAlfie’, this is truly era-defining pop.
