7digital What we said: It’s not often we get to recommend an album which warrants use of the phrases “soft rock” and “fretless bass”, so forgive us if we grasp the opportunity with both hands. Perhaps his jet-set lifestyle as a member of The New Pornographers has taken its toll, because on Dan Bejar’s ninth album under the Destroyer banner, he mines the kind of 80s-playboy, fretless bass-driven, soft rock (yes!) that would nicely accompany one of the more seductive late-night bar scenes from Miami Vice. Whimsical saxophones and laconic trumpets embellish Twin Shadow-ish synth washes and shimmying drum machines, whilst Bejar delivers cryptic lyrics in his breathy Bolan-esque drawl. Perilously flirting with bad taste proves to be Kaputt’s trump card: highly recommended.
