Following Wire’s lead, another bunch of trailblazing post-punks are making a comeback. Wielding their first fresh material since 1996’s Shrinkwrapped, Gang of Four have returned with a blistering collection of barbed missives that suggest age has done little to mellow their punk spirit. In fact, on the strength of the ascerbic Content, it appears Jon King has mostly spent the intervening years sharpening his tongue. Critiques on consumerism and surveillance culture are coloured by those trademark elastic bass lines and Andy Gill’s ragged, spidery riffery. And with surprising innovations to their sound showcased on the vocoder-heavy ‘It Was Never…’, Gang of Four may be pushing 60 but they’re not luddites.
